Fort Micro #8 Grain Tower Battery

Another one of the very best of the best, and one of the very few TOP CACHE awards for a cache I hadn't found - two DNFs, a year apart, and both late in the day. But another year on, a third visit, and a long and most determined search, meant I was able finally to add it to my "found it" list :-).

What a moody and desolate place, the most atmospheric of any cache location I've visited, a truly awesome place for a cache.

Fort Micro #13 Fort Darnett

I love getting out on the water. This time I left "Amberel" at home and took the inflatable dinghy a couple of miles out into the Medway Estuary. It's quite surprising, but great news, that places like this old fort remain accessible.

More fantastic climbing caches, this time VERY high, and with an unusual twist :-). The cache owner and mpw246pl "helped", where "help" is a euphemism for doing all the hard bits :-) I did have to get to the cache, but lacked the skills and equipment to manage by myself. I marvel at the abilities of those who can set and reach these caches unaided, and am so grateful for the help that means I can share their experiences.

P.S. as a result of these experiences I do now have some of the skills required, and this is largely due to the training I received on this cache, "Under Flock & Key" and others.

Not just any old TOP CACHE, but one of my best caches ever. With the expert assistance of Purple Pineapple and Merstham Mafia I overcame my fear of heights to abseil to this cache. At one point I thought I'd never get back up again, but eventually I dragged myself to the top.

I was too scared really to enjoy it, but I'm chuffed that I've done it. I'm not likely to do anything like that again (that's what I said at the time, but I've actually now done loads of things like it :-) ), but it's a cache I'll never forget.

Medway Canoe Trail

A superb trail of caches along the Medway - accessible only from the river. The Medway is a great choice, not only because it is a quiet waterway, but it is well suited to canoeing, with canoe passes (flumes) at the locks. There have been several additions to the "Pilgrim's Way Up" series, but this is the only one to have terrain rivalling the original. A series of straightforward tree climbs, a good starter for those new to climbing with equipment, plenty of practice at setting up and ascending without having to move far between each stage.

The Challenge Cache Challenge - Diamond

A series of challenge caches. Many challenge caches are just a cache and dash in a layby, but these were good hides, and offered a very pleasant walk set in a lovely location.

A rather loose collection of mostly straightforward tree climbs, rather than a series as such, and including "Prewash", all done in great company making for a very enjoyable day.

Horror Hike

Definitely "a cache for the season" ... found at any other time of year, or in the daytime, they would lose some of the effect, but doing it on Halloween, at night and in the company of a large group of friends was exactly right. For best effect they need to be in good condition, and we were lucky to do them just after they had been maintained. All put together they were a super series, a nice location (not that we saw much of it in the dark and rain), with a good variety of hides, caches and "embellishments" :-).

The Other One

As I said in my log at the time, this was a cache that every cacher should do.

It's a shame that it was archived. kewfriend suggested I recreate the cache, which I have been honoured to do, albeit in a slightly different form as there is now another cache at the original location.

Flatcoat Walker Hide #500

On a day that took in a large number of Flatcoat Walker caches, Ten Miles Max suggested we make the short detour to this one. Maybe I should have guessed, but nothing she said prepared me for this one - it was a big surprise, and all the better for it :-).

Unfortunately now archived.

Virginia Water - Breakheart Hill

A pleasant surprise while I was walking round Virginia Water to set a cache of my own. I was expecting the lovely location, though it will be much lovelier in 3 months time than it is in the middle of January. But I wasn't expecting such a good quality, well stocked box - such things tend to be rather rare in this area. And that lifted the cache into my top 2% :-).

Stoughton Stumble

For the circuit. A super series - a lovely walk, with good size caches in good hides. The link is to the first one, beside the parking, which is way out of character with the rest of the series and rather lets the side down, but don't be put off by that.

Unfortunately my visit was ended halfway, when both Maisie the GeoSpaniel and myself suffered multiple bee stings, but we will be back to finish it off.
